Women in Parliament - 26 February 2014
A new study released from the Parliamentary Library in Canberra shows the number of women in Australian and state parliaments has doubled since the last study done in 1996.
The updated research paper Women parliamentarians in Australia 1921–2013, shows there was 664 women in parliament in December, up from 303 in 1996.
These statistics provide interesting reading for those following the increasing number of women in senior decision-making roles in Australia’s governing institutions.
As these changes are flowing through national and state parliaments, the challenge for local government is ensuring activities reflect and accommodate greater participation of women as councillors and senior managers.
Currently, only 34 per cent of councillors are women, despite women comprising 50 per cent of the population.
The Victorian Local Government Women’s Charter section on our website has a range of materials with suggestions about ways local government can increase participation of women in senior decision-making.

Male councillors also identified bullying as a concern. We need to ''red card" bullying in local government. There needs to be a wholesale shift across NSW local government to stamp out bullying..
